Rob M. | Sunburst Tomatoes!

Tim and Nancy Bass from Sunburst Tomato Company are back this Spring with their famous Sunburst, hot- house tomatoes. Let me tell you, these are not the average hot-house tomato!
Most greenhouse tomatoes are brought in from out of state, which means the growers have to pick them before full ripeness so that they survive the shipping process. This practice is common of all tomatoes grown out of state, but is even more apparent among greenhouse tomatoes, because greenhouse tomatoes are more delicate to begin with. This delicacy means that growers have to pick them while they are still hard and green, so that they won’t begin to soften and ripen until they have traveled across the country. The problem with this strategy is that the tomatoes ripen off the vine without access to nutrients. Since these nutrients are what provide the tomato its flavor and complexity, the result is a disappointing, flavorless tomato.
Greenhouse tomatoes grown locally, on the other hand, do not have to deal with any of these added shipping hazards. Tim and Nancy simply pick their tomatoes when they are ripe, load them carefully into boxes, and send them to their customers just a few miles away. The result is a tomato that has reached full ripeness on the vine, under careful monitoring, with full nutrient access. The flavors will speak for themselves! | (Rob M.) | |
