Applesauce is a tasty fall treat, that's also very easy to make. Making applesauce is a fun activity you can do with kids in under an hour, and everyone will enjoy the results. This recipe can easily be doubled, tripled, quadrupled, etc. for a larger yield.
From Papa Spud's:
4-5 apples, peeled, cored, chopped into large chunks
Your kitchen:
3/4 cup water
1/8 cup sugar (*This is a starting point. More or less sugar may be required depending on the sweetness of your apples, and your tastes).
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1) Peel, core, and chop apples into large chunks. Sweet apple varieties are best for apple sauce. Consider using Gala, Fuji, or Pink Lady apples, although you may want to experiment with other favorite varieties or even mixed varieties.
2) Combine chopped apples, water, sugar, and cinnamon in a sauce pan. Cover and cook at medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, until apples are soft and tender. Remove from heat to cool.
3) Once apples are cool enough to handle, mash with a fork until they reach the desired consistency. If you prefer a very smooth applesauce, the blender can be used.
4) Add more sugar to taste. Chill in the refrigerator.
5) Serve cold topped with cinnamon. Goes great by itself or as a side with sausage or pork.
