PS News: Spring is near, Exciting new products while we wait!
Mar 27, 2013 at 5:37 pm |
It's been a busy couple of months at Papa Spud's. Growers are dealing with unseasonably cold temperatures, and often overcast conditions, that unfortunately are delaying Spring harvests. However, as we wait for temperatures to warm, and for fresh Spring goods to start flooding in, we have been able to welcome a number of awesome new local vendors as well as introduce some new products from current partners. Highlights include the award winning Liver Pate from The Weeping Radish, Gluten-free breads and cupcakes from Panaderia Bread Uprising, Corned Beef / Roast Beef / Pastrami from Nooherooka Natural Farm, Jamaican Sauces and Seasonings from Pluto's Inc, and some delicous peanut / almond / cashew nut butters and granola from Huntington Kitchen.

However, the new exciting products do not stop here, we are currently working with the Ashe County Cheese Company to offer a wide variety of aged cheeses, including a 5 year old super sharp cheddar, monterrey jack, pepper jack, habanero cheddar, and a tomato basil cheddar. We also hope to have ground buffalo and ground ostrich available for you to try in the coming weeks.

In terms of produce, late March is generally the most barren time of year. Winter crops are coming to a close, and we wait anxiously for fresh Spring crops to start coming in. The cold temperatures and overcast days have further delayed Spring harvests, and created headaches for growers, but things are starting to turn. We are now seeing the first green onions and radishes of the Spring season, which is a good sign. Generally, small spring roots like these are the first to come avialable, followed by Asparagus, Strawberries, Arugula, Tatsoi, Bok Choy, Snap Peas, and Lettuces, then the harvest season will really break open. We currently have a number of Spring/Summer products from local greenhouses and solar tunnels (strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes), but prices will come down on these products significantly once they are ready in the fields, it's just more expensive to grow them in a greenhouse.

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy these first tastes of Spring, take advantage of the last tastes of winter, and enjoy all of the exciting new non-produce options we have to offer! When was the last time you had Sweet Potato Liver Pate!?
