How to Prevent Mold Growth on Strawberries
Nov 13, 2012 at 6:24 pm |
Strawberries like pretty much every other berry are very susceptible to mold growth. Unlike other produce, which generally deteriorate due to moisture loss, berries often don't make it to full storage life, because they see premature deterioration from molding. The following tip is meant to prolong berry life by killing the mold spores on the berries, so that hopefully they do not fall victim to early molding.

1) Mix 1 part white vinegar with 10 parts water.
2) Soak berries in the vinegar mixture for 4-5 minutes, then rinse.
3) Lay berries out on paper towels to dry.
4) Once dry, repackage strawberries and store in the refrigerator. It is very important that the berries be dry before you repackage them, otherwise they may turn to mush.

That's it! The vinegar kills any mold spores on the berries, so that they do not multiply and result in early molding. However, the vinegar is diluted enough that it doesn't affect taste. If you can reduce the potential for mold growth, strawberries will keep for 7 days, sometimes up to 14. This trick can be used on other berries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc.
