It's Fall, It's Apple Season!
Sep 26, 2012 at 3:29 pm |
This week we had 6 different apple varieties available from Perry Lowe Orchards, and the diversity is just getting started. Pictured below from top to bottom we have Mutsu, Stamen Winesap, Golden Delicious, Gala, Goldrush, and Suncrisp. More information on each variety below:

Mutsu: A green, tangy apple with good sweetness but also a mix of tart. Mutsus are a cross between Golden Delicious and Indo apple varieties, originally cultivated in Japan. Flavor has been great on the Mutsus recently.

Stamen Winesap: A dark red, tart apple. It is a little early for Stamens right now, the flavor is still developing, but this tart apple is great for fresh eating as well as cooking. A nice alternative to the traditional "apple" flavor.

Golden Delicious: Very sweet, mild flavor. Popular yellow skinned apple, but they are prone to bruising and shriveling so make sure they are cold stored and handled with care.

Gala: The 2nd most popular apple in America behind Red Delicious. Classic sweet apple with great flavor. Thinner skins than most apples make them seem less "tough", more delicate. Great option for homemade apple sauce.

Goldrush: Similar to Golden Delicious, but more acidic, with a tangy tart flavor. Crispy, strong skins can make them seem tougher than other apples, but great, unique flavor.

Suncrisp: Sweet somewhat acidic apple, often described as slightly "spicy". Great for fresh eating as well as cooking. It is a little early for Suncrisps right now, but flavor will improve in the coming weeks.
