What's Hot in Fall Produce?
Oct 18, 2011 at 4:16 pm |
This week we spent some time putting together statistics on which fruits and vegetables were most popular with Papa Spud's members this week. Unsurprisingly, apples topped the list with 44.47% of members ordering them for inclusion in their deliveries. Coming in second were summer squashes (zucchini and yellow squash), which is impressive considering they have been available since June. Other types of produce tend to lose popularity after having been on the list for even a few weeks. I think this speaks to the versatility of summer squashes. Greens (including collards, kale, chard, and turnip greens) came in a surprising third in popularity, with 32.11% of members including greens in their delivery. I think the wide availability, seasonality, and relatively low cost of greens contributed to this popularity, but was still surprised to see them as the third most popular item on our list.

There was also some interesting variability inside product categories. For example, bell peppers as a whole were the 7th most popular item with 28.55% of members including them in their deliveries. However, this is largely due to the popularity of the Red Bell Peppers. Red bell peppers accounted for 67.2% of all bell pepper orders, green bell peppers were 25.8% of orders, and ivory bells were accounted for just 6.9% of bell pepper sales. The most popular apple variety available this week was Suncrisp (36.1% of apple orders), followed by Golden Delicious (30.7% of apple orders), then Rome (21.2% of apple orders), and Mutsu was the least popular apple variety accounting for only 11.9% of apple orders.

The following chart lists the categories for fruits and vegetables we had available this week by the percentage of Papa Spud's members to include that item in their deliveries.
