Veggie Barn
Dover Farm Rd. and Tryon Rd.
Raleigh, NC -

Art Mekus has resided in Raleigh for twenty-five years. Having had an interest and passion for growing food, Art begin experimenting sustainable farming techniques in the backyard of his downtown Raleigh residence. Over the years, Art’s interest for sustainable agriculture began to develop into ambitions to experiment on the agricultural potential of urban landscapes. In 2009, Art contacted a landowner off Tryon road with an interesting proposal. Art wanted to create a demonstrational garden that could profitably operate within a local market while remaining sustainable. After receiving permission, Art began growing on a 1500 square foot plot. Art’s vegetables, which included spring onions, butter crunch lettuce, and pointed-head cabbage, prospered well on that site. Art now has expanded his production to 4500 square feet (about 1.1 acres). The gardens are organically fertilized with chicken manure and irrigation is supplied from an adjacent pond using a solar powered pump. The pond not only serves as irrigation, but also as a drainage catch for run-off nutrients that flow from the uphill garden site. Art’s farm, The Veggie Barn, supplies local Raleigh restaurants such as 18 Seaboard (located downtown on Seaboard Ave). The Veggie Barn is also located at the downtown Raleigh farmer’s market on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and also operates an on-site produce stand. Art’s demonstration provides insight into the productive uses of Raleigh’s urban landscapes. Urban agriculture demonstrations have been successfully implemented in cities such as Portland Oregon, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Veggie Barn is currently an organic operation that is now in the process of receiving their certification and becoming one of only two certified organic farms in Wake County.
