Nuts, Pecan Pieces, shelled
Britt Farms

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day next week, we have a special running on southern pecans. Dr. King spent much of his time organizing and leading the Civil Rights movement, in local black-owned restaurants throughout the south. Dr. King would meet with fellow Civil Rights leaders over a plate of gumbo, catfish etoufee, or fried chicken at restaurants like Paschal's in his hometown of Atlanta, and discuss future plans, regroup after protests, or just unwind from a long day. One of Dr. King's favorite foods was southern pecan pie!

Pecan Pie became popular in the 1930's when the Karo company published a recipe for it, to promote their new corn syrup. By the early 1940's, the Atlanta Journal (MLK's hometown newspaper, that he worked for as a child) was receiving frequent submissions from Atlanta residents sharing their favorite pecan pie recipes. By 1943 the The Joy of Cooking had even added the dessert to their third edition. In celebration of MLK Jr. Day, we will be offering a special on pecans along with the 1943 Joy of Cooking recipe, that was likely very similar to the version that Dr. King grew up with in the 1940's.
